| Jam Session at NYS Museum, Albany NY The New Amsterdam Musical Association (NAMA), the first African American musical association in the United States, founded in 1904 by James Reese Europe, will hold a jam session outside the Represent exhibition on Sunday, November 19 2006, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.. Located on 107 West 130th Street in Harlem, NAMA was created because African American musicians were not allowed into the American Federation of Musicians Local 310 union. New York State law required musicians be union members in order to perform in NYC. Throughout the20th century NAMA was a gathering place for jazz musicians and Harlem personalities. The association also teaches music lessons to local youth in an effort to keep the tradition of music making alive in Harlem. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
