| Cedar Crest Dance Company's 2006 "Winter Solstice" With performances ranging from traditional Christmas carols to the driving beats of Latin and African music, the Cedar Crest Dance Company's 2006 holiday dance concert, "Winter Solstice" is a diverse collection of pieces highlighting holiday traditions and music from around the world. "Winter Solstice" will be presented on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2, 2006 in the Samuels Theatre, Tompkins College Center. "The goal of this year's concert was to present a variety of world music styles and cultural holiday traditions", says Robin Gerchman, director of dance at Cedar Crest and director of the concert. "The audience can look forward to dances inspired by Celtic, German and Jewish traditions in addition to holiday favorites like 'Carol of the Bells' and 'O Holy Night.'" The concert will also feature performances by special guest artists. The Steel City Swingers are a group of Cedar Crest and Lehigh University students with an interest in the dance style of the big band/swing era, and will present a jazzy rendition of a holiday favorite. Tabatha Robinson-Scott, the newest member of the Cedar Crest dance faculty, will bring dancers from The Monarch Dance Company of Philadelphia to present a piece set to George Gershwin's timeless "Rhapsody in Blue." Opening night will be particularly exciting for those involved in dance at Cedar Crest, who will celebrate the official grand opening of the new Steinbright Dance Studio after the performance. The roughly one million dollar expansion project provides a new dance studio, connected to the original studio, with faculty offices and changing rooms. Cutting-edge instructional technology has been designed into the new facility to allow rehearsals and classes to be recorded and analyzed on the spot. "Dance has been consistently growing at Cedar Crest", says Gerchman.
