| Mary Foster Conklin: ’Blues for Breakfast’  Mary Foster Conklin can be heard in clubs nationwide, both as a soloist and with Art Lillard's Heavenly Band. Praised by the Washington Post as "a sensitive artist (but not frail) with a wide-ranging boldly colored voice and an open ear for off-beat material" she celebrates the release of her third recording Blues for Breakfast - Remembering Matt Dennis on Rhombus Records.Blues for Breakfast is a tribute to the late great singer, songwriter and pianist Matt Dennis (1914-2002), who was hired by band leader Tommy Dorsey in the 1940s as an arranger/composer and later had a full career of his own playing the country's top supper clubs. His songs "Angel Eyes" and "The Night We Called It a Day" were recorded and made famous by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and countless others. Besides his early hits with the Dorsey band with lyricist Tom Adair, the recording includes compositions with lyrics by Earl Brent, Sammy Cahn, Virginia Maxey Dennis, Jerry Gladstone, and Bobby Troup. Mary will hold a West Coast release event at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles on October 25, with the Stuart Elster trio and then head back to New York for an East Coast release at Sweet Rhythm on November 7 at 8 and 9:30pm, joined by pianist/arranger John diMartino, Greg Ryan on bass, Tony Romano on guitar, Joel Frahm on sax and Ron Vincent on drums, with a special guest appearance by Cuban artist David Oquendo. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
