Cincinnati’s Fountain Square Reopens

Cincinnati’s Fountain Square reopens Saturday, October 14 with a day-long celebration from noon to 10 p.m. The newly renovated area has been “smoothed, grooved and improved” according to Master of Ceremonies, Bootsy Collins.

The celebration features a mix of local fine arts with exciting national acts. A collaborative performance of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet and Cincinnati Opera will dramatically reveal the newly restored Tyler Davidson Fountain. Poet Laureate and Cincinnati native Nikki Giovanni will read her original poem in honor of this occasion. National hip hop and rock artists take the stage in the evening.

“The idea is that there is something for everyone and everyone should be here for this celebration, ” said Bill Donabedian, managing director of Fountain Square. “This celebration is representative of what Cincinnatians can expect on Fountain Square day in and day out — leveraging our community assets and presenting exciting entertainment.”

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Cincinnatians will be treated to a free concert on Fountain Square. First up is Hi-Tek, the Cincinnati-born DJ and producer for such hip-hop artists as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, celebrates his ‘Nati roots. He performs with Talib Kweli, the Brooklyn-born rapper who emerged in the late 1990s as a member of Black Star. Then, the East Los Angeles rock band Los Lobos brings its energizing brand of rockabilly, jazz and Latin styling to Cincinnati. Chicago rockers Ok Go make their first major Cincinnati appearance. These darlings of VH-1 and YouTube have caused an Internet sensation with their innovative dance videos.

At 1:30 p.m., the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, led by Assistant Conductor Eric Dudley will perform with Cincinnati Opera and Cincinnati Ballet to dramatically reveal the newly restored Tyler Davidson Fountain. The program includes Fanfare for the Common Man, written in 1942 by Aaron Copland during World War II especially for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, followed by the lively Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein. Mark Panuccio, leading tenor with Cincinnati Opera, performs the famous aria, “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot. The performance culminates with a selection from Respighi’s The Fountains of Rome. The Cincinnati Ballet will add a dynamic flair to the event as their dancers perform to a choreographed flag processional creating a unique performance piece representing the arts and culture of Cincinnati.
