| Carl Saunders at California State University California State University, Bakersfield's music department will be hosting the Carl Saunders Sextet as part of the fourth season of the Legends of Jazz Concert Series. The Carl Saunders Sextet will be performing in the Dore Theatre on Friday, Oct. 13. Saunders began playing trumpet in the seventh grade and he quickly found that he had a natural ability, mostly learning to play by ear. He played in school bands, and after graduating high school, his mother helped get him a job with Stan Kenton's Orchestra. Saunders auditioned for Kenton's band and spent much of 1962 on the road. After spending part of 1963 traveling with Bobby Sherwood, Saunders settled in Las Vegas, where for 20 years he played with countless show bands playing with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. Saunders also traveled as lead player with Paul Anka and Robert Goulet as well as such famous bandleaders as Maynard Ferguson and Benny Goodman. In 1984, Saunders moved to Los Angeles where he was soon playing lead trumpet for Bill Holman's Orchestra, a position he still holds. Saunders also worked with Supersax, Bob Florence and Gerald Wilson. In 1994, he became a member of the Dave Pell Octet.
