| Stephen Haynes at New Haven's Firehouse 12 On Friday, November 10th, Hartford-based trumpeter/cornetist Stephen Haynes will perform at New Haven's Firehouse 12 with his quartet Bugaboo, featuring guitarist Allan Jaffe, bassist Mario Pavone and drummer Warren Smith. Recently called "endlessly imaginative" by the Hartford Courant's Owen McNally, the group performs a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of contemporary American music ranging from Johnny Cash to Ornette Coleman. "At times boldly abstract, and at others comfortable and familiar, Haynes and his work pioneer rich new territory in the arts of composition and improvisation, " writes the Hartford Advocate. This will be his third appearance at Firehouse 12 (he performed with both nHarmonic Brass and the Joe Morris Septet in 2005), but his first as a leader. Convened in 2004 at Hartford's Real Art Ways while Haynes was Composer-in-Residence there, Bugaboo will be recording its debut release at Firehouse 12 prior to performing two live sets that evening. A musician, arts advocate and educator, Haynes studied at the historic Black Music Division at Bennington College directed by Bill Dixon. He is a charter member of iconic pianist Cecil Taylor's AHA! Orchestra who has also collaborated with noted composers and improvisers such as Taylor Ho Bynum, Rhys Chatham, Gunter Hampel, Leroy Jenkins, Butch Morris, JD Parran, George Russell and LaMonte Young. In addition to his performance career, Haynes serves on the board of directors of both Chamber Music Plus Northeast and Y'All of New York. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
