Eliane Elias: ’Around the City’

Brazilian born composer and jazz piano prodigy Eliane Elias released her third album Around The City on RCA Victor/Bluebird Records. The new disc marks the first time the multi-talented artist has deliberately sought out co-writing sessions, working with noted songwriter Lauren Christy of The Matrix, the in-demand writing/production team that has co-written chart-topping and Grammy-nominated singles for artists like Liz Phair, Jason Mraz and Korn.

Lively Latin funk-master Andres Levin, the brainchild behind the Afro/Latin/Hip-hop fusion of Yerba Buenas Island Life, also co-produced several tracks. The result is an album that proves Eliane is not afraid of exploring new and exciting directions for her music. I always want to challenge myself, to do something different and integrate all the wonderful sounds I have swimming around in my head into new creations.

Sung both in English and Elianes native Portuguese, the mesmerizing compositions include the slice-of-life tilt of the title song, Around The City, the ethereal Segredos (Secrets), and the rousing opener Running. The latter track was also remixed by DJ Strobe (known for The Peter Malick Group ft. Norah Jones remix album New York: The Chill Album, as well as work for artists such as The Killers and Pink), which made its debut on Elianes MySpace page and has since been featured on numerous music/mp3 blogs.

The album also hosts unique covers including the Tito Puente penned-Santana hit Oye Como Va, an inspired version of Bob Marleys Jammin which boasts Elianes first ever arrangement of electronic loops, and a playful version of alt-pop icon Becks Tropicalia, which was Becks homage to the Brazilian Tropicalia psychedelic/soul fusion movement of the mid-1960s that influenced Elianes earlier years. She also surrounds herself with her usual lineup of great musicians, including Randy Brecker, Marc Johnson, Oscar-Castro Neves, and Paulo Braga.

Eliane hit the road in early September to perform selections from Around The City, treating fans to the sizzling in-the-moment dynamics that have garnered acclaim for her live shows worldwide. The international tour will continue through the end of October.
