| Jason Moran And Ben Ratliff In Conversation October 3 the Friends of Education of The Museum of Modern Art present a discussion between Jason Moran, jazz pianist, and Ben Ratliff, jazz and pop critic for The New York Times, as part of its series Conversations: Among Friends. The evening features a special performance by Moran and his wife, soprano Alicia Hall Moran, of the composition Milestone. Jason Moran also offers piano performances of material from his recent album Artist in Residence, released by Blue Note Records on September 12, 2006. The speakers are introduced by Josh Siegel, Assistant Curator in the Department of Film and Media, The Museum of Modern Art. Jazz pianist Jason Moran has collaborated with visual artists to create his compositions and has received commissions from cultural organizations such as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Dia Art Foundation in New York, and Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. A selection of these compositions is included on his current album Artist in Residence (Blue Note Records, September 12, 2006), which derives its title from Moran's 2005 residency at the Walker Art Center. The album includes Milestone, a work inspired by conceptual artist Adrian Piper and composed for the Walker Art Center; The Shape, The Scent, The Feel of Things, a work composed in collaboration with video/performance artist Joan Jonas and produced by Dia:Beacon; and RAIN, a sextet commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Ben Ratliff has been a jazz and pop critic for The New York Times since 1996 and is author of The New York Times Essential Library: Jazz: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings (2002).
