Free Concerts in Philadelphia

This October, University City District, a neighborhood and business improvement organization located in West Philadelphia, will inaugurate their bi-annual free outdoor music series.

It all begins on Thursday, October 5 when UCD presents The Campbell Brothers, who will bring their soaring, moaning, and driving sound of "sacred steel" guitars to Clark Park, a beautiful nine-acre greenspace in the heart of University City at 43rd Street and Chester Avenue. The Campbell Brothers were the first sacred steel group to tour extensively. Their performances include a compelling, rich variety of material from the African-American Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: the growling, wailing, shouting, singing and swinging voice of the steel guitar, played as you have never heard it played before.

Then, on Thursday, October 12, UCD hosts Billy Martin and Socket. Medeski Martin & Wood percussionist Billy Martin leads an ensemble of NYC downtown luminaries and sonic witchdoctors who heal the ailing, chase the dragons and cast spells on your world. Billy Martin has become one of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and influential percussionists in the music world. His ultra-sensitive, hyper-melodic drumming -- which explores the ideas of jazz, hip-hop, electronica, African music, and other genres -- has an organic feel to it, filled with soft, natural edges and fluid energies.
