Minnesota sur Seine Festival

The third annual Minnesota sur Seine music festival is fast approaching at various Twin Cities locations from October 12 through 22, 2006. The festival includes over 15 performances by musicians from the Twin Cities, Europe and North Africa in styles including improvisational jazz, Celtic, hip hop, spoken word and rock.

The lineup features returning French artists including Pablo Cueco, Benoît Delbecq, Didier Petit and Jacky Molard, Euro-stars such as Tony Hymas, Peter Brötzmann and Nathalie Richard, U.S. standouts including Umar Bin Hassan and Jef Lee Johnson, Moroccan vocal group B'net Houariyat, Twin Cities talent including Happy Apple, Fat Kid Wednesdays, Brother Ali, Douglas Ewart and much more.

The many exciting shows featured in the 2006 Minnesota sur Seine lineup include: Friday, October 13 – Dominique Pifarély (French violinist), Craig Taborn (keyboardist from New York), Dave King (Twin Cities drumming king) plus Peter Brötzmann (German saxophonist) with Mark Sanders (British drummer) at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Huss Music Hall.

Sunday, October 15 – The Jacky Molard Acoustic Quartet, Celtic music from Brittany, France at the Turf Club. Monday, October 16 – Bernard Lubat, a French percussionist of incredible scope, plus the Pablo Cueco Drum Conference at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Huss Music Hall.

Wednesday, October 18 – Nathalie Richard with the Jef Lee Johnson Trio. Ms. Richard is a French film star and singer. Jef Lee Johnson is a Philadelphia-based guitarist who was called a "gift from GOD" by Chaka Khan. ?uestlove of The Roots simply says, "he is God." Completing the group is Chico Huff (bass) and Michael Bland (drums). The performance is at the Artists' Quarter.

Thursday, October 19 – Umar Bin Hassan & Pablo Cueco plus Ursus Minor with Brother Ali. Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets could be called one of the first rappers. The group was born in Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park in 1968, an incendiary outfit confronting social issues through their music. Ursus Minor is Tony Hymas (keyboards), Jef Lee Johnson (guitar), François Corneloup (saxophones) and Stokley Williams (drums), with hip hop hero Brother Ali. The show is at The Fine Line.

● Saturday, October 21 – B'net Houariyat & Fat Kid Wednesdays. Hailing from Morocco, each of the five Berber women in B'net sings, plays percussion and dances, entrancing audiences with their energy, humor and spirituality. At The O'Shaughnessy.
