Ali Akbar College of Music Presents a Benefit Concert

Saturday, October 14th, 2006 in the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, San Francisco, CA, Ali Akbar College of Music Presents a Benefit Concert Featuring Srimati Lakshmi Shankar, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Sri Alam Khan.

This benefit concert is held in honor of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri's 25th anniversary as Director of Percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music. Mr. Chaudhuri's dedication to teaching has added tremendously to the vision of the AACM created and upheld by Maestro Ali Akbar Khan for the past 39 years. Swapan brings to the college an invaluable depth and knowledge of the Lucknow style of tabla as well as a great understanding of the numerous tabla traditions available in India. Many of his students have been with him since he arrived in 1981. He has raised numerous young tabla players from childhood to adulthood with the care and watchful kindness of a father.

We are very honored to have the melodious vocalist, Srimati Lakshmi Shankar, sing at this joyful occasion and to experience these two senior artists in a setting that evokes memories of many wonderful past concerts. Lakshmi Shankar first joined the college as a teacher and performer in 1968 when the college first began its classes. Her support for the continuation of AACM has continued throughout the years by giving numerous benefit concerts for the college at venues throughout the Bay Area. Her tremendous understanding and presentation of ragas has been a great source of enjoyment for our student body, as well as the many fans who attend her concerts.

Sri Alam Khan has emerged as a fine sarode soloist following many years of accompanying his father, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan. Each concert played by Alam gives the audience the opportunity to watch a musician grow and unfold. This process is common in India where children of musicians first begin performing in the background then slowly make their way to center stage.

Both artists will be joined by Swapan Chaudhuri's masterful accompaniment on tabla. His particular style has set a music standard shared by music lovers around the world. His perception of ragas and subtle support has made him a favorite accompanist to many of India's greatest performers. The interplay and rapport between the artists, and sense of love and family shared between them, will make for a memorable night to be enjoyed by all.
