| Issue 7 of Bill Shoemaker's Point of Departure Since launching September 2005, Bill Shoemaker's Point of Departure: an online music journal has been acclaimed by media outlets in the US and Europe for its strong content and informed opinions about jazz and other forms of uncompromising music. Point of Departure is a 2006 Jazz Journalist Association Jazz Award Nominee for Best Website Concentrating on Jazz Issue 7 of Point of Departure launches September 3rd. Issue 7 celebrates John Coltrane's 80th Birthday with a few items related to the composer/saxophonist's legacy. Electric Ascension is an interview with the members of Rova, whose interpretations of Ascension set a new marker for future interpreters of Coltrane's music. The Turnaround! features a 1992 Down Beat feature – John Coltrane: Cleaning The Mirror – which examines what was then the prospect of Coltrane's legacy being amended by newly discovered recordings from 1966 and '67., including what was subsequently issued as Stellar Regions.. The Circle with a Hole in the Middle revisits an out-of-print LP by saxophonist and Coltrane expert Andrew White, Seven Giant Steps for Coltrane. Amsterdam-based saxophonist and clarinetist Michael Moore takes the Travellin' Light questionnaire. Moment's Notice contains reviews of CDs by artists ranging from Art Ensemble of Chicago to Aki Takase. If that's not enough, the Free Jazz contest offers readers the chance to win real prizes.
