| Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee he Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee 2006-2007 presents a lineup of concerts featuring a wide variety of music ranging from jazz, blues, and roots to Latin, pop, R&B, and gospel. Guest artists include legends of jazz and gospel music, as well as acclaimed up-and-coming musicians. McCoy Tyner, Derek Trucks Band & Susan Tedeschi Band, Marcus Miller, Sweet Honey In The Rock, and more are to be featured. Some of these artists will perform with Berklee students, faculty, or alumni, showcasing Berklee's own heavy-hitters alongside the best of contemporary music. The series kicks off with a performance by legendary pianist McCoy Tyner, leading an all-star group in "The Story of Impulse, " a retrospective of some of the definitive works of that seminal label, and of jazz itself. (Friday, September 29).The group includes trumpeter Wallace Roney, saxophonist Donald Harrison, and trombonist Steve Turre, among others. This concert is also the opening of the BeanTown Jazz Festival. Derek Trucks Band & Susan Tedeschi Band will perform Thursday, October 26. Susan Tedeschi, a Grammy-nominated singer, guitarist, and songwriter who graduated from Berklee in 1991, recently released her fourth record, Hope and Desire, a collection of soul and gospel tunes by such artists as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Donny Hathaway. The Derek Trucks Band blends a range of styles, including jazz, blues, Latin, rock, and Eastern Indian. Trucks's virtuosic innovations made him the youngest player to make the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list. Acclaimed percussionist and Berklee Associate Professor Eguie Castrillo presents a night of high-energy Latin jazz (Thursday, November 9). His band - featuring Berklee faculty, students, and special guests - will showcase many of the classic tunes that started the Latin jazz movement, including "Caravan, " "Smile, " and "A Night In Tunisia." Castrillo, whose latest album is titled Palladium Tradition, has performed or recorded with artists including Arturo Sandoval, Ruben Blades, Michel Camilo, and Jennifer Lopez. Producer, composer, and jazz bass legend Marcus Miller performs with a student group - directed by Berklee associate professor of guitar David Fiuczynski - playing tunes that span his extraordinary career with Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, and his own Grammy-winning recordings (Friday, December 8). Black Music Matters, With Sweet Honey in the Rock and Cornel West (Thursday, February 1) - this concert talk, the first time together for these internationally renowned artists and scholars, is a special event launching Africana Studies at Berklee, and a celebration of diversity. Dr. Cornel West will give a brief talk addressing the importance, impact, and role of black music in the culture and society as a whole. A capella group Sweet Honey In the Rock will speak and also perform a short set to underscore the themes addressed by Dr. West. Berklee's Reverence Gospel Ensemble, directed by Dennis Montgomery, III, will also perform. Berklee's Great American Songbook concerts are presented annually to pay tribute to songwriters who contributed to the compendium of mid-20th century popular song. This year, the college honors Stevie Wonder, a prolific and prodigious talent who continues to influence countless musicians across genres (Sunday, February 25). Berklee faculty and students will perform Wonder's songs in tribute. Berklee's 21st Annual International Night (Thursday, March 29) features Berklee students from around the world performing in a variety of styles. Countries represented in recent years include Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Ireland, Dominican Republic, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Scotland, Colombia, Mexico, and the U.S. Berklee's finest emerging vocalists take center stage for a night of pop, R&B, jazz, Latin, folk, blues, and more (Thursday, April 26). The outstanding lead singers will be chosen from over 100 students who audition for a spot in this popular concert.
