| Carla Marciano at New Haven Italian quartet The Carla Marciano 4tet (Carla Marciano, alto and sopranino saxophones; Alessandro La Corte, piano; Aldo Vigorito, bass; Gaetano Fasano, drums) will kick off its three-stop East Coast tour with a two-set performance on September 29th at New Haven's Firehouse 12. The group's first-ever American concert (festival appearances in Hartford and New York follow in October) will feature music from its latest release, A Strange Day (Black Saint). Marciano mostly performs around Europe and her native Italy, but American jazz critics know her as a musician that is "as fierce and relentless as anyone who plays the saxophone" (Mark F. Turner, AllAboutJazz.com) and "communicates on a personal level, taking advantage of her beautiful tone quality on alto to 'sing' lyrically with genuine passion" (Jim Santella, Cadence). A recording artist for the legendary Black Saint label, she burst on to the international scene with her 2002 debut, Trane's Groove, which paid tribute to iconic saxophonist John Coltrane's modal period. A Strange Day followed in 2005, and not only introduced her working quartet but also a further refined and more personal sound. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
