| Anoushka Shankar in Vancouver As part of the multi-event Festival Vancouver, Anoushka Shankar's appearance tonight at the Chan Centre will feature music from her fourth album Rise, which explores and showcases her range of composing talents on instruments other than the long-necked, multi-stringed sitar. Shankar is accompanied by an eight-member group featuring acoustic and electronic music. Opening act is Dharmakas trio on a variety of instruments that include flute, the didgeridoo and hand percussion. She shares a famous name, her father's talent and his instrument. But Anoushka Shankar has emerged from Ravi's formidable shadow as a sitar virtuoso worthy of her own limelight. And, just as her now-85-year-old father played with and influenced a previous generation of Western musicians - notably the Beatles - she not only has acquired famous collaborators such as Madonna, but is credited with a resurgence of sitar music in India and abroad. "I've been trying to tap into a younger culture, " the 25-year-old told one interviewer. "My father did that for many decades, but people closer to my own age don't necessarily know as much about music as his young fans did." write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
