| Tomoko Miyata at Jazz Bakery Unique Japanese born vocalist, Tomoko Miyata who has recorded an interesting version of Mongo Santamaria's classic "Afro Blue" on her recent CD "This Side Up" will be vocalizing with Doug Klug Group at the Jazz Bakery, in Los Angeles for one night only, July 19. In a word Tomoko Miyata is captivating. With influences that range from Anita O'day to Chet Baker and from Ella Fitzgerald to Karrin Allyson, she has developed a sound of her own that is always elegant, though at times haunting; playful yet sophisticated. The warm toned vocalist comes from Kasugai, outside Nagoya, Japan. Her parents were always supportive of her musical desire as they enjoyed her singing accompanied by her sister playing piano. Falling in love with jazz at 17, she decided to come to Los Angeles to hone her skills as a singer. In 1998, she joined the big band at Glendale College and later formed her own group, Milestone. With this group she recorded "Through the Window," a collection of all time jazz standards and performed in the Los Angeles area. In 2003, she returned to Japan to promote her CD, which was well received. As well as the jazz standards, Tomoko enjoys performing the compositions of Jobim. Then, she slides seemingly effortlessly into the Portuguese language, to explore the Musica Popular Brasileira, visiting such composers as Baden Powell, Dori Caymmi, and Chico Barque. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
