Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, and Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister Responsible for the Region of Montreal Fortier announced that the festival, which started yesterday, will receive $850, 000. "The Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is very close to the hearts of Montrealers and is one of the largest musical gatherings in the world, " said Minister Oda. "I am pleased to support this event, which allows Canadians to hear musicians from around the world and to discover new jazz trends." "The international reputation of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal on the world stage is due to the efforts of visionaries who, nearly 30 years ago, began to highlight the arts and culture for the enjoyment of Canadians, " said Minister Fortier. The 27th Festival International de Jazz de Montreal will feature 2000 musicians from 30 countries in more than 500 shows, 350 of which will take place in outdoor venues. The Jazz a l'annee series will offer 25 shows between September 2006 and June 2007. Of the total funding announced, $200, 000 comes from the Department of Canadian Heritage Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.
