Hull City Council's 14th Hull Jazz Festival opens on Saturday 29 July for a nine-day feast of world-class jazz in the city. Another major coup is the specially commissioned Delta Blues Project presented by New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist Abram Wilson. This work features three bands in one the Delta Blues Trio, Londorleans (a traditional New Orleans brass band) and the Abram Wilson sextet. This plays Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 5 August.

Humphrey Lyttelton is busier today than he's ever been and his band is continues to tour throughout Britain and Europe. He makes his first visit to the Festival, accompanied by the wonderful vocal talent of Tina May on Friday 4 August at Hull Truck.

Other national stars attending the Festival include Ian Shaw with his tribute to Joni Mitchell, Liane Carroll (BBC jazz singer of 2005), David Newton plus local trumpeter Martin Jones, whose new band Jazz Jones is highlighted on Monday 31 July.

The ever-popular outdoor Jazz weekend will take place in Queens Gardens over the weekend of July 29 and 30. Saturday headlines Bombon Cha an 8-piece Charanga son band made up of UK-based Cuban Salsa musicians plus the North Stars Steel Orchestra with the authentic sound of the Steel Pan. Big bands such as the Geoff Laycock Tribute Band and the Little Big Band take to the stage in the Gardens on Sunday 30 July. Last year thousands of people attended the Queens Gardens event, which is completely free

Regional musicians form an important part of the Festival and this year will feature over 50 Hull jazz players at the Good Fellowship concert room, which is turned into a jazz club during the Festival.
