| 'On The Outside' Festival in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Plans are well advanced for the 3rd edition of Jazz North East's 'On the Outside' Festival, to be held in the Northern English city of Newcastle from 13th-15th October. As in its first two years, the Festival brings together improvisers from the USA, mainland Europe and the UK, and presents them in different combinations over the three days. It's a format that owes something to Derek Bailey's Company events: although some sets may feature relatively familiar groupings, others throw together musicians who have never played together – possibly never even met – before the weekend. Thus, at this year's Festival, there will a set for the New York quartet of Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, William Parker and Hamid Drake (a version of the well established 'Other Dimensions in Music' group), but each of them will also be programmed to play with completely new collaborators. Similarly the trio of Georg Graewe, Ernst Reijseger and Gerry Hemingway will get a set, and then be thrown into the mix with the other Festival participants. Festival organizer Paul Bream is currently at the stage of consulting with the musicians about the programme. "Once we've booked all the players, we ask them to suggest possible combinations, which can throw up some intriguing ideas. Paul Rogers, for instance, has asked to play in a trio with Daniel Carter and Birgit Ulher: I haven't the faintest idea what that will sound like, but I'm certainly looking forward to hearing it!"
