| Jane Ira Bloom's June Concerts Jazz soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom will play at Sweet Rhythm and Tonic with her elektro-acoustic quartet Like Silver, Like Song Thursday, June 1 & 8. Joining Jane will be creative drummer Matt Wilson, bassist Mark Helias, and newcomer Dawn Clement on piano & keyboards. The band brought the house down at the 2006 IAJE Festival and always fires up for gigs in NYC. Her continuing commitment to "pushing the envelope" in her music has led to collaborations with such outstanding improvising artists as Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell, Min Xiao-Fen, Rufus Reid, Bob Brookmeyer, Julian Priester, Jerry Granelli, Jay Clayton, Mark Dresser, Jamie Saft, Bobby Previte, & Fred Hersch. Recent performances include such diverse venues as Carnegie Hall, Grace Cathedral, the Hayden Planetarium, the San Francisco & Earshot Jazz Festivals, as well as NYC engagements at Dizzy's Club, Sweet Rhythm, and Tonic. Winner of the 2003 Jazz Journalists Award for soprano sax of the year, the Downbeat International Critics Poll for soprano saxophone, and the Charlie Parker Fellowship for Jazz Innovation, she is the first musician ever commissioned by the NASA Art Program, and was honored to have an asteroid named in her honor by the International Astronomical Union (asteroid 6083janeirabloom). She's recorded five CDs on Arabesque Jazz and her most recent recording 'Like Silver Like Song' appears on the innovative Artistshare label. The CD was cited on numerous top ten jazz lists including Best Music of 2005 by jazz critics Derk Richardson/ SF Gate, Rusty Hassan, & Elzy Kolb. Jazz critic Bob Blumenthal has described Bloom as "a leader with a commitment to beauty and adventure."
