| Richie Cole Meets Art Pepper Richie Cole meets Art Pepper: "A Piece of Jazz History", released on CD by Jazz Excursion Records is the first and only recorded collaboration by these two great musicians. Cole plays not only his signature alto saxophone, but tenor and baritone saxes as well (a first!), while Pepper swings out on alto saxophone and clarinet. Roger Kellaway, Bob Magnusson and Billy Higgins provide solid rhythm with a familiarity gained while backing both saxophonists on separate occasions. This historic session took place in San Francisco during 1982, and was originally released on Palo Alto Records vinyl under the title Return to Alto Acres (PA 8023). Sadly, Art Pepper passed away just four months after this recording was made. Jazz historians and collectors worldwide have long anticipated this release on CD, while others have been unaware that it even existed. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
