Pittsburgh Jazz Society Accepting Applications

Mellon Financial Corporation and the Pittsburgh Jazz Society today announced that applications are being accepted for the 2006 Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship.

The recipient of the one-year, $5, 000 award will be selected by a panel of nationally recognized jazz musicians and educators on the basis of musical interest and ability as demonstrated by an application and audition tape that includes samplings of various musical styles. Any new or continuing undergraduate student enrolled full-time at any four-year college or university in the United States during the fall 2006 semester is eligible to apply. The scholarship will be evenly divided between the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 terms.

Applications for the Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz scholarship must be submitted by Wednesday, July 5, 2006, with the winner to be announced by the end of July. For more information or to obtain an application, call the Pittsburgh Jazz Society at (412) 343-9555 or visit the Jazz Society's Web site at http://www.pittsburghjazz.org.

The winner of last year's inaugural Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship, Chris Parker, is completing his sophomore year at Duquesne University. An outstanding jazz drummer, Parker drums in Duquesne's top jazz combo, and also is studying guitar with Joe Negri and Mark Koch.

"The Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship is an important facet of our long-standing collaboration with the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, " said Rose M. Gabbianelli, Mellon executive vice president and director of corporate affairs. "Two of our most important objectives are supporting jazz education and providing live performance opportunities for great jazz musicians, " said Tony Mowod, founder and president of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society. "We're grateful to Mellon Jazz for their longtime and loyal support in both areas of Pittsburgh Jazz Society activity."
