ECM at York Festival

The music of ECM is highlighted at the Spring Festival of New Music, held at England's University of York from May 3-12.

Dowland Project leader John Potter and Trio Mediaeval's Anna Maria Friman appear alongside mezzo soprano Angelica Cathariou to present "Estonian Icons: The Music of Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis" (May 5). The programme includes Pärt's "Stabat Mater", "Which was the son of..." and "Fratres", and Tormis's "Folksongs".

Scandinavia's Trio Mediaeval are joined by saxophonist Trygve Seim and accordionist Frode Haltli (May 10). The Trio will give the UK premiere of Sungji Hong's "Missa Lumen di Lumine (which can also be heard on their album "Stella Maris" ), and world premieres of William Brooks's "Six Mediaval Lyrics" and Trygve Seim's "Between Voice and Presence", based on texts of Sufi poet-philosopher Jalaluddin Rumi.

On May 11, the Festival presents Manfred Eicher in conversation with John Potter. From the Festival programme book: "Since founding the Edition of Contemporary Music in 1969, Manfred Eicher has become one of the most influential producers of contemporary classical music, jazz and world music (...) Manfred Eicher has worked with John Potter for many years as a member of the Hilliard Ensemble and, more recently, with the Dowland Project."

On May 12, Trygve Seim and Frode Haltli give a duo concert.
