Prestigious rewards forThree 6 Mafia

The rap group Three 6 Mafia was presented with the Key to The City of Memphis by Mayor Willie W. Herenton, the city's first African-American mayor. Three 6 Mafia was also presented with the prestigious "Note on Beale Street, " the Memphis version of a "star on Hollywood Boulevard, " during a special reception at the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum on Saturday, April 1.

Three 6 Mafia -- who catapulted to the forefront of mainstream attention on March 5, 2006 when the group became the first hip-hop ensemble ever to take home the Academy Award for Best Original Song -- was honored at Saturday's red-carpet reception with special presentations from The City of Memphis, the Beale Street Development Corporation and the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum. In addition to receiving the Key to The City of Memphis, home of the blues and birthplace of rock 'n' roll, Three 6 Mafia became the first rap performers to be given a "Note on Beale Street."

The April 1 event marked the second "Memphis Music Salute" hosted by the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum in tribute to the legendary musical icons of Memphis, Tennessee. The museum, whose mission is "to preserve and tell the story of Memphis music and perpetuate its legacy, " honored the legendary R&B/funk pioneers, The Bar-Kays at its first "Memphis Music Salute." A plaque honoring Three 6 Mafia will join the Bar-Kays tribute on permanent display in the museum.

Three 6 Mafia secured its place in hip-hop history when, in a surprise upset, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences singled out "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp, " from Craig Brewer's highly acclaimed "Hustle & Flow, " for the Best Achievement In Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) Oscar.
