| Peter Van Huffel: Return Tour to Canada Last April, Kingston born saxophonist Peter Van Huffel, now a New York City resident and an active voice on the New York jazz scene, came up to Canada for a seven day tour with his exciting New York based quintet. The band performed seven amazing concerts in Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and Guelph from March 28th until April 1st, 2006, including a handful of high school workshops along the way. Their energetic and free flowing musical concepts were received with great enthusiasm at each of the venues they performed. Peter Van Huffel will be returning to Canada this year with the same group of musicians for a slightly shorter tour. This time they will be performing a variety of newer compositions recently recorded for an upcoming CD release. The new music focuses much more on the sound of the group as a whole and on collective improvisations rather than on the individual soloist. Each band member expresses strong influences from all streams of jazz, including the traditional and the extreme avant-garde. Collectively they are able to create a mood that is exciting and unpredictable. This group has been performing together now for close to two years and it is obvious that these musicians know how to work together. They have such a strong sense of each other's musicianship that there are never any boundaries. During their performances, it seems like literally anything can happen at any given moment. The group includes guitarist Scott DuBois, originally from Rockford, Illinois who was recently chosen as one of the semi-finalists in last year's Thelonious Monk competition; pianist Jesse Stacken from Minnesota who is building a reputation as one of New York's most exciting new pianists and is performing with a variety of innovative groups around town; Canadian - yet New York-based - bassist Michael Bates who is soon to release his second CD with the German label "In Between the Lines"; and drummer Jeff Davis, originally from Greely, Colorado, who can be heard almost nightly in New York with a variety of different groups including his own collaborative project "Tone Collector" with saxophonist Tony Malaby. The group will be touring from .
