| North Carolina Azalea Festival For the tenth year, the North Carolina Azalea Festival is among the Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Events in the Southeast USA for April-June, 2006. Now in its 59th year, the North Carolina Azalea Festival is a springtime tradition that pays tribute to millions of colorful azaleas that bloom in Historic Wilmington and North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast . To experience the N.C. Azalea Festival is to experience Southern culture and hospitality. It is estimated that more than 350, 000 people visited events related to last year’s Azalea Festival. This year’s headline concerts include “American Idol” sensation Carrie Underwood (Wed., April 5) and Rhythm and Blues superstar Patti LaBelle (Sat., April 8). Since 1983, the Southeast Tourism Society (www.southeasttourism.org) has been the largest membership organization promoting travel to the Southeast. Each month since 1985, STS selects 20 of the top events across the Southeast and publishes them quarterly. Events selected for the STS Top 20 enjoy widespread publicity and have the honor of being included among a listing of prestigious events and festivals.
