| Toronto Jazz Festival Announces Headliners byCindy McLeod The TD Canada Trust Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival will be cookin’ for 10 days this summer when it takes over the city from June 23 – July 2, 2006. Bringing all that jazz for the past two decades, the festival is celebrating its twentieth anniversary with more than 1500 musicians performing over 350 concerts at more than 40 locations across the city. Etta Jameswill be performing at The Hummingbird Centre on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Best known for classics such as ‘At Last, Something’s Got a Hold On Me, Dance With Me Henry and Fool That I Am’, Etta has gone on to become one of the most prolific female R&B vocalists of her era, alongside Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. First discovered by Johnny Otis as a young teen in the 1950s, Etta has spent the past five decades making definitive blues, soul and R&B music. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame and awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, Etta James has truly become one of the great forces in music. John Zorn’s Acoustic Masada. A true innovator and leader in avant-garde jazz, saxophonist John Zorn will perform on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at The Music Hall at 7pm. Drawing inspiration from an eclectic range of sources and using unconventional sounds, Zorn has been breaking, transforming and reshaping the boundaries of jazz for over three decades. Writing and performing music of astonishing breadth, Zorn has explored the gamut of musical interests including everything from film music to free jazz to hardcore thrash to Yiddish folk music and back. After a lengthy absence from Toronto, Zorn makes a triumphant return with his group, John Zorn’s Acoustic Masada. Based on the idea of creating a new radical Jewish sound that would be relevant today, Zorn merged traditional Jewish scales with the sound of Ornette Coleman to create Masada. Joining Zorn will be Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass and Joey Baron on drums.
