| The Titirangi Festival of Music 2006 When the Titirangi Festival of Music committee put together its dream list of performers for this year’s Festival (31st March – 8 April 2006), they had no idea that they would secure them all. Now in its 2nd year, the Titirangi Festival of Music invites people from across Auckland (and beyond) into Waitakere City to share, celebrate and participate in local music. This year boasts an impressive line-up of acts including Te Vaka, Pitch Black, Lucid3 and newcomers to the local community, The Feelers. Local musicians and songwriters provide the foundation of the Festival with around 90% of performers calling Waitakere City home, including Mahinarangi Tocker, Andrew Fagan, Te Vaka, Gahu, DJ Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson, Spacifix, Ishta, Mamaku Project, James Reid (The Feelers), Lucid3, Dan Sperber and Ddub. Other acts are also coming from as far away as Christchurch to show their aroha and support for the city that has rhythm and soul – Waitakere. With seven main concerts focusing on different musical genres to reflect the diversity and artistic spirit of Waitakere City, there’s at least one evening of entertainment to suit all tastes ranging from roots and jazz to techno and rock. The Festival will be officially opened from 6.30pm on Friday 31 March by a spectacular street procession and cultural performance by local schoolchildren called ‘Warrior Heartbeat’, followed by an opening address by Waitakere Mayor, Bob Harvey. A programme of workshops for adults and children will again form the cornerstone of the Festival, with an even wider variety to choose from than last year including workshops for singing and song writing, making and playing traditional Maori instruments, how to play African drums and thumb-piano, Latin percussion and a drumming master class by Jazz legend Frank Gibson Jnr. The main concerts in the Titirangi Festival of Music 2006 are: Mahinarangi Tocker Nationally respected, west-Auckland songwriter, Mahinarangi will perform songs from her latest, critically acclaimed album, “the Mongrel in me”, supported by classical duo ‘Heartstrings’. When: Friday 31st March Monster Rock Night A huge night for rock enthusiasts featuring Lucid3 as the headline act, supported by Tutts, Duchess and Foamy Ed. When: Saturday 1st April. Te Vaka Te Vaka an award winning 'World Music' sensation. They come fresh from performing at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth games. Supported by Ishta, a world music fusion band featuring an eclectic mix of instruments. When: Sunday 2nd April. The Feelers Fresh from a sell-out nation-wide tour, The Feelers are one of NZ’s most successful bands, with a string of awards and multi-platinum selling albums. This is a unique opportunity to see this exceptional band due to their close connection to the Waitakere City and commitment to this Titirangi event. Presented by Ewen Gilmour as MC and former Mockers front man, Andrew Fagan, this concert is set to rock the Festival. When: Wednesday 5th April. Hot Night of Cool Jazz Featuring internationally renowned drummer, Frank Gibson Jnr, with his quartet, supported by The Dan Sperber Complex and Mamaku Project. When: Thursday, 6th April. Made in Aotearoa A night of roots and reggae featuring special Festival guests KORA; this group of brothers hail from Wellington and come with a huge live reputation. Supported by Ddub and Ruia. When: Friday 7th April. The Festival Glitter Ball A night of funk, soul, house and techno headlined by Pitch Black supported by Open Souls, DJ Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson and Spacifix. When: Saturday 8th April. More music throughout the Festival can be found at ‘The Festival Club’: Designed to showcase even more local music talent, The Festival Club includes performances by the Pauafritters, Gahu, Soundscapes, the Beautiful Losers and the Three Mulleteers, followed by an opportunity for other local musicians and singers to take part in an impromptu, open-mic section or a spontaneous jam-session in the cafй and lobby area of the theatre. When: Monday 3rd – Wednesday 5th April.
