Elevator to the Gallows: New DVD with Soundtrack by Miles Davis

Elevator to the Gallows features a now legendary soundtrack by Miles Davis. The new Criterion Collection edition of the film on DVD (out this April) will also carry archive footage of Davis improvising the film's score and a new video discussion about that score with jazz critic Gary Giddins and musician Jon Faddis.

The film launched the directorial career of the then 24-year-old Louis Malle, and brought together the beauty of Jeanne Moreau, the camerawork of Henri Deca, and the musical talent of Davis. A touchstone of the careers of both its star and director, Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l'chafaud) is a richly atmospheric thriller of mistaken identity, unfolding over one tense night in Paris.

Other Extras on the DVD include, new and archival interviews with Louis Malle, actors Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, and original soundtrack session pianist Ren Urtreger.
