| Seattle Jazz Legend Jay Thomas in Canada Jazz Greats Jay Thomas and Phil Dwyer Appearing in Victoria/Nanaimo February 17 & 18. Jazz fans on Vancouver Island will be able to enjoy a rare treat when Seattle Jazz Legend Jay Thomas makes the trip north of the border to appear with award winning pianist and saxophonist Phil Dwyer. Jay Thomas has been a fixture of the Seattle jazz scene since the late 1970's and has appeared with a “Who's Who” of Jazz greats as a sideman, and has also recorded 8 albums as a leader. Jay is a master of the classic hard bop tradition, but what makes him especially remarkable is the fact that he not only plays all the saxophones and flute at a superb level, but he is also one of the great modern jazz trumpeters as well! His latest recording, “Accidentally Yours” features the renowned pianist Geoff Keezer and his trio. Phil Dwyer is well known to Jazz fans in Canada for his outstanding work over the last 20 years with many of the leading names in music. He was a first call studio player and writer in Toronto throughout the 90's, playing on at least 100 CDs and countless commercials. In addition Phil is heard frequently on CBC Radio on shows such as JazzBeat, OnStage, In Performance and the Sunday Edition. Three-time Juno Award winner for Best Jazz Album, Phil has also received the K M Hunter award in 2002 for artistic excellence. Fans have two opportunities to catch this all-star band in action and an intimate duo setting at Sylvan United Church's Jazz Vespers in Mill Bay. Jay will be playing tenor, soprano and baritone sax as well as trumpet. Phil will play tenor sax, bari sax as well as piano. Listen to all sorts of combinations, including a revisiting of the classic bari/trumpet sounds of Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet. Joining the duo will be a world-class rhythm section with Ken Lister (on bass) and Josh Dixon (drums). write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
