| Fuseleeds06 Returns to Leeds Fuseleeds06 returns to the city from 6 – 14 May 2006, bringing an eclectic, international mix of jazz, rock, folk and contemporary classical music, offering audiences the chance to experience live music as they might not have heard it before. From festival commissions by 2005 Mercury Music prize winner and Brit Award nominee Antony (Antony and the Johnsons), Faithless’ Sister Bliss and award winning jazz musician Matthew Bourne to the premiere of Hanif Kureshi’s new multimedia collaboration with Michael Nyman, experience the ultimate adventure in new music over nine days and nights. To celebrate the return of fuseleeds a series of taster events will be taking place in the city during the months leading up to the festival. Setting a fuseleeds-style precedence for the year ahead, Californian underground hip-hop legend and DJ Shadow/Blackalicious collaborator Lyrics Born is the star of January’s Taster. Presented in conjunction with The Wardobe’s Drum Major club night expect an evening of funk, R&B, rock, reggae and soul which defies categorisation. Lyric’s dominance on the US underground scene continued in 2005 with the release of his Same S*** Different Day CD. Friends of fuseleeds, V3ctor, present February’s Taster, Funckarma – one of the most prolific electronic music duos in Europe. Their gig at the Brudnell Social Club will be Dan and Joel Funcken’s (aka Funckarma) Leeds’ debut and is set to follow in the success of their long time collaborators, Shadowhuntaz’, gig in 2004 at the same venue. The evening will feature DJ support V3ctor resident Skeksi. March sees fuseleeds explore its folk and jazz side, with a performance at Leeds College of Music’s The Venue featuring acclaimed folk legend June Tabor in collaboration with two of the UK’s leading jazz musicians – Huw Warren (piano) and Iain Ballamy (saxophone). The debut of a special project, the trio will perform a programme of traditional English and Welsh music as well as their own distinctive original material. Since the 1960s, Tabor has developed a body of song material and a way of story telling through song that has won her loyal audiences around the world. April’s Taster is an exclusive double bill showcasing the work of the Fused Ensemble, a group of young people from Leeds who meet weekly to create their own music and work with a variety of guest musicians, most recently Dennis Rollins who performs with the group tonight. The club night also sees Dennis Rollins’ Bad Bone & Co take to the stage with their high energy, groove-based funky dance music. Hailed by Jazzwise Magazine as, "...the most exciting British trombonist for decades...", Dennis Rollins is a regular collaborator with Courtney Pine, The Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, Jazz Jamaica and Blur to name just a few. fuseleedsfuseleeds is a major new biennial music festival celebrating the wealth and diversity of today’s vibrant new music scene. fuseleeds06, will return to the city between 6 – 14 May 2006, presenting an eclectic, international mix of jazz, rock, folk and contemporary classical music, offering audiences the chance to experience live music as they might not have heard it before.
