| Zirkus Goes Bizurkus at Bats The all original Zirkus Big Band has teamed up with an unlikely bunch of Wellington performers to create a big band production like no other. They will be premiering this collaboration in the Fringe Festival at BATS Theatre from the 8th till the 11th of February. The show is a big band concert with a theatrical twist. The band performs compositions by Rosie Langabeer designed to take the audience on a journey from the desert to the swamps to the dark and dirty city, through a carnival, past the dog house and in to outer space. This trip is punctuated along the way by international poetry, aerials, bizarre cabaret acts and special guest stars. The Zirkus Big Band performs regularly around Wellington and has been a popular show in the last three Wellington International Jazz Festivals one of these shows being broadcast by Radio New Zealand. Geoff Totton of the International Music Forum describes Zirkus, “I'm very excited about this big band... these young musicians are doing something very exciting... influenced by Mingus, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Ornette Coleman, and Carlo Actis Dato... doing something I would never have thought possible in New Zealand 15 years ago. This band sounds like a Carlo Actis Dato circus of clowns.” This is a premiere collaboration between the Zirkus Big Band and the Ake Ake Theatre Company with an exceptional line up of international talent including local saxophonist Jeff Henderson, Auckland wind instrumentalist and New Zealand jazz icon Jim Langabeer and aerialist Pipi-Ayesha Evans. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
