Pianist's New CD Time Lines to be Released on February 21, and Marks His Return to Blue Note Records, Where He Recorded Some of the Most Acclaimed Music of His Storied Career. Renowned Composer and Pianist Continues to Influence Young Jazz Artists in His Fifth Decade As One of Modern Music's Most Iconoclastic Stylists

On February 21st, Andrew Hill will release Time Lines, marking the beginning of his third era as a leader for Blue Note Records. The new quintet recording from the innovative and nfluential pianist/composer marks his return to Blue Note, where he recorded some of the most essential and acclaimed sides in the jazz world from 1963 - 1970 that included Point of Departure, Black Fire and Judgment. Hill is reunited on Time Lines with trumpeter Charles Tolliver, who twice recorded with him on Blue Note in the '60s. At 68-years-old, Hill continues to push the envelope with eight creative new compositions.

Long a favorite of critics, collectors and jazz fans the world over, Hill's resurgence began with two acclaimed Palmetto recordings at the turn of the century as well as the Blue Note release of previously unheard sessions titled Passing Ships, of which The New York Times quipped, “The best jazz album of 2003 was recorded in 1969.” Hill refers to Time Lines as his “coming full circle.”

Playboy notes, “Like Hines, Tatum, and Monk before him, Andrew Hill pushes jazz to new ground, ” and has named Hill as their second 2006 Jazz Artist Of The Year in the March issue. This category in their long-running music poll was inaugurated last year honoring fellow Blue Note pianist Jason Moran. Moran, who has studied with Hill, is just one of the most recent celebrated artists who cite Andrew Hill as a primary influence.

Hill will bring his working quartet of tenor saxophonist / clarinetist Greg Tardy, bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson to Birdland in early March, and will be joined by trumpeter Tolliver for this very special engagement.
