Ottawa Jazz Festival: 2006 Winter Series

To kick off the Winter Series, Ottawa Jazz Festival Inc. in partnership with L’Alliance Française, presents the Michelle Grégoire Quintet at the National Library and Archives of Canada on Friday February 17, 2006.

Winnipeg-based pianist and composer Michelle Grégoire embarks on her first Canadian tour with her quintet. They appeared on her debut CD, Reaching, released last year, which received a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award as "Outstanding Jazz Recording" alongside such notables as Diana Krall. The inspired and exciting renditions of traditional jazz in Reaching have received excellent reviews and has been a regular feature on CBC’s After Hours (National Jazz Broadcast), making their list of top jazz CDs released in 2004.

Then things really start to heat up at the Dominion Chalmers Church on Sunday March 5th, 2006, when we welcome Havana's all star group of musicians, ¡Cubanismo!, led by fiery trumpeter and founding member Jesús Alemañy, who are a masterful blend of traditional Cuban dance rhythms with the artistry of a world class jazz orchestra that is uniquely their own.

And speaking of unique, hold on to your hats or should I say shoes, as we welcome the
proclaimed “Barefoot Diva”, Cesaria Evora, aptly nicknamed because she performs her shows sans shoes. The incomparable Evora plumbs the depths of her heart and sings into its core, capturing a universal sentiment that only a select few vocalists are capable of expressing. She will also be performing at the awe- inspiring venue, Dominion Chalmers Church, on Sunday April 9th, 2006.
