BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006

The date of this event with a stellar line-up of performers and presenters - 6 February 2006 at The Brewery, London EC1. Extended highlights: broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday 8 February from 7.00 to 9.00pm.

Legendary singer-songwriter Richard Thompson will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and be one of the performers at this year's BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, joining a star-studded cast of presenters and musicians.

One of folk music's highest-rated artists, guitarist Thompson will play at the event solo and also as part of a reunion of the Fairport Convention line-up which recorded the classic LP Liege And Lief, voted Most Influential Folk Album of All Time in a public vote for this year's awards.

The line-up of Thompson, bassist Ashley Hutchings, guitarist Simon Nicol, drummer Dave Mattacks and fiddle player Dave Swarbrick split shortly after the album was released in 1969; and, with the exception of a handful of festival appearances many years ago, haven't shared a stage since. Acclaimed singer Chris While will perform vocal duties in the absence of the late Sandy Denny.

There'll be performances too from Kate Rusby (singing with Roddy Woomble from Idlewild) fresh from a sell-out UK tour; from Mercury Award-nominated Seth Lakeman; from flute player Michael McGoldrick, who will play with his full band, and from much-loved singer John Tams, musical director of Radio 2's forthcoming documentary series The Radio Ballads, who will showcase two songs from the six-part series, due to air on the network from 27 February.

The Radio 2 Folk Award presenters this year include stars of music, stage, screen and canvas, with guitarist Mark Knopfler, actor Charles Dance, opera singer Lesley Garrett, painter Jack Vettriano and comedians Jennifer Saunders, Ade Edmondson and Frank Skinner among the guest presenters alongside show host Mike Harding.

Folk Awards executive producer John Leonard says: "I'm looking forward to this year's Awards with its performances from Richard Thompson, the original Liege And Lief line-up of Fairport, Kate, Seth, John and Michael and so many other outstanding folk artists, plus all our guest presenters.

"Radio 2 has backed folk music to the hilt in the seven years we've staged the Folk Awards and this will certainly be a night to remember."

Award winners receive the coveted black iron Folk Award statuettes, hand-wrought from salvaged mill machinery by sculptor Mick Kirkby-Geddes in his Holmfirth studio.

Extended highlights of the night, hosted by Mike Harding, will be broadcast on Radio 2 on Wednesday 8 February from 7.00pm.
