| Diane Schuur will perform in Toronto Two-time Grammy winner, Diane Schuur has just been added to Toronto Downtown Jazz's 20th Anniversary Concert Series lineup, presented by JAZZ.FM91. She will perform at the Glenn Gould Studio on April 26, 2006. Known as The New First Lady of Jazz, Schuur was first discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1979 at the Monterey Jazz Festival. From that legendary beginning, with her three and a half octave vocal range, Schuur has gone on to sing the blues with B.B King, shared the stage with Ray Charles and recorded with Stan Getz and Barry Manilow, among many others. Blind since birth, Schuur had her first professional gig at the age of nine when she performed at the local Hilton in Tacoma, Washington. Often compared to jazz greats, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, the New York Times has singled her out to be “the singer most likely to succeed in carrying on the broad jazz-pop tradition of Ella Fitzgerald”. With over a dozen recordings under her belt, this vocal powerhouse has garnered five Grammy nominations, performed at the White House and Carnegie Hall, and has appeared on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show 11 times. The 20th Anniversary Concert Series, running from February to April, features seven concerts that will help kick off the TD Canada Trust Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival. Previously confirmed artists in the Series include The Bad Plus (February 8), Chris Potter (February 15), Charlie Hunter (February 22), Cubanismo! (March 6), Randy Weston (March 10), and Russ Little (April 3). The TD Canada Trust Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival will take place from June 23 to July 2, 2006. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Jazz News :: home page |
