| 33rd Conference of the International Association for Jazz Education The International Association for Jazz Education takes Manhattan Wednesday, January 11 through Saturday, January 14 2006 for its 33rd Annual Conference. Education, teacher training, and networking will be firmly at the heart of the International Association for Jazz Education conference agenda, combined with an impressive performance schedule. In addition, the conference will feature a 75,000 square-foot industry exposition, commission premieres, technology presentations, research papers, award ceremonies, and top school groups from Europe, Australia, Croatia, Peru, Israel, Canada, and the United States. IAJE Executive Director Bill McFarlin: "It's a program suited for a city that has served as the vanguard of jazz for more than 50 years and is a reflection of how far has come as the association officially representing the jazz field." Of special note is a conference emphasis on jazz from Scandinavia. Entitled Nordic Now, the focus will include 8 performance ensembles, a business panel, and a significant presence in the conference trade show. Highlights will include a performance by the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra with Chick Corea and presentation of the International Jazz Festival Organization Jazz Award for New Talent to saxophonist Kjetil Møster. The IAJE Jazz Alliance International industry track will focus on career development, new media, the recording industry, and personalized consultation. These insightful and sometimes controversial panels and workshops are geared to members of the jazz recording, journalism, presenting, performing, retail, and radio industry. IAJE 2006 Conference Highlights include: Wednesday, January 11 * 6th Annual IAJE Gala Dinner, benefiting the IAJE Global Outreach Fund. Hosted by NEA Jazz Master and GRAMMY Award winning vocalist Nancy Wilson, the 2006 IAJE Presidents Award will be presented to NEA Jazz Master and legendary trumpeter Clark Terry. Spellman, 10AM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * Downbeat First-Person Interview with NEA Jazz Master/tenor saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins, 3PM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * BET Jazz The Jazz Channel presents a panel discussion, Corporate Strategies for Expanding the Jazz Audience in the 21st Century. Executive Vice President and General Manager of BET Jazz Paxton Baker and Time Warner, Inc Chairman and CEO Dick Parsons discuss how television can maintain and attract new viewers to jazz, with special guests. 5PM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * Exhibit Hall Grand Opening, the biggest party of the conference! 6PM, Hilton, Rhinelander Gallery and Americas Hall I & II. * Evening concerts: The WDR Big Band from Cologne, Germany returns to IAJE to perform "Djangology, " a tribute to Django Reinhart featuring gypsy guitarist Bireli Lagrene. Friday, January 13 * JazzTimes Excuse The Musical Disruption with Christian McBride & Bob Blumenthal, a free-wheeling, no-holds-barred panel, on which the Philly Fanatic McBride and the buttoned-down Beantowner Blumenthal cover a wide range of jazz and sports-related topics, until the whistle blows. Plus, five good minutes with a special guest. 12PM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * Clark Terry: The Man And His Music, the NEA Jazz Master and trumpet legend is interviewed by Nat Hentoff. 3PM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * 16th Annual NEA Jazz Masters Awards Concert, honoring this year's Jazz Masters: percussionist/conguero Ray Barretto; vocalist extraordinaire Tony Bennett; arranger-composer Bob Brookmeyer; pianist-composer Chick Corea; clarinet virtuoso Buddy DeFranco; blazing trumpeter Freddie Hubbard; and talent manager John Levy. Saturday, January 14 * NEA Jazz Masters panel, an informal discussion with the 2006 NEA Jazz Masters Ray Barretto, Tony Bennett, Bob Brookmeyer, Chick Corea, Buddy DeFranco, Freddie Hubbard, and John Levy, moderated by A.B. Spellman. 1PM, Hilton, Trianon Ballroom. * Blindfold Test presented annually by Downbeat, is a live version of the magazine's most popular column, the "Blindfold Test." This year, the innovative and dynamic young Blue Note pianist Jason Moran will sit in the hot seat for the listening test that will challenge him to identify and discuss the music and musicians from selected recordings, moderated by Dan Ouellette. 3PM, Sheraton New York Ballroom East. * A closing night performance with Norway's Trondheim Jazz Orchestra with special guest, Chick Corea. Corea also will perform with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette in a historic trio setting considering the three have not performed together.
