Irvin Mayfield swing into Centennial Hall

What do you get when you combine the power of jazz with the prestige of an orchestra? That’s right, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. This relatively new orchestra brings together the forces of New Orleans’ unique reputation to build a new model of Cajun jazz. Down in the cradle of jazz below the Mississippi Delta, a group of New Orleans musicians have boldly laid a foundation to preserve America’s indigenous music and inspire a new generation of greatness. Under the direction of Grammy nominee Irvin Mayfield and pianist Ronald Markham, the orchestra plays the music of jazz greats and newly commissioned works. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is a spirited, swinging, 16-piece band that combines the brightest young New Orleans talent with consummate professional musicians.

Irvin Mayfield was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1977. In September 2003 he was appointed as Cultural Ambassador for the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana, for whom he acts as spokesperson for jazz. He is Artistic Director of Arizona’s Chandler Jazz Festival and has played a significant role in assisting in the development of a jazz audience in that region. In 2002 he founded and is currently Artistic Director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. He teaches both classical and jazz trumpet and has offered workshops and master classes nationally and internationally.
