Ken Zuckerman: The meeting of two traditions

The South Bank Centre welcomes the acclaimed lutenist and sarod player Ken Zuckerman back to the Purcell Room on 1 February. One of the world’s most eclectic masters of improvisation, Zuckerman is joined by Indian percussion masters, tabla player Anindo Chaterjee and zarb player Keyvan Chemirani, for an inspiring programme entitled Carte Blanche. This programme gives the listener the opportunity to hear in dialogue the similarities and contrasts between two immensely rich musical worlds, those of the European middle-ages and ancient North-Indian classical music. European art music of the middle-ages has clear roots in Eastern traditions and similarly, North Indian classical music, one of the most highly developed art musics in the world, is marked by a continued openness to influences from other cultures. Both traditions have a very strong structural framework, from which the musicians must improvise the musical fabric at the time of performance.
