Unique Jazz Vibist Tom Toyama

Selected from many artists applicants, jazz vibraphonist Tom Toyama will be given the opportunity to demonstrate his unique style of solo vibraphone playing at the 33rd Annual International Association of Jazz Educators International Conference. From performing on a 4-octave vibe with four mallets for many years, Tom has developed a unique solo style of playing using the extended range. Most players use 3-octave vibes.

Tom will present his “Solo Jazz Vibraphone Mastery Clinic” in the Murray Hill Suite of the Hilton Hotel in New York City on January 12, 2006.

His performance experience includes Mongo Santamaria, Robert Thomas Jr., Ira Sullivan, Claudio Roditi, Terrance Blanchard, Paquito D'Rivera, Frank Wess, Edgar Meyer, Charnett Moffett, the Natalie Cole Orchestra, Japanese koto master Tamiko Asai, taiko drum master Takemasa Ishikura, and shakuhachi master Seizan Sakata.
