Tri-C Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday

Cuyahoga Community College will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the college's 29th annual observance of his birthday. This year's theme, "From the Mountaintop to the Promised Land, " will feature a free program with the Grammy-winning musical group Sounds of Blackness and the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, January 15, 2006 in the College's Metropolitan Campus Auditorium, 2900 Community College Avenue near downtown Cleveland.

Led by founder and director Gary Hines, Sounds of Blackness is the winner of three Grammy Awards. Over the years the group has recorded two gold albums and one platinum album, been nominated for an Emmy Award and received three NAACP Image Awards. The group presents workshops, master classes, lectures, and demonstrations nationwide in vocal and instrumental African-American music including R&B, gospel, blues, spirituals, and more.

Special guest conductor Eric Benjamin will lead the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, a full symphony orchestra, which has performed for 66 years. The Orchestra has expanded its focus to provide musicians of all ages and professions a means of learning and performing symphonic music.

Wayne Dawson, co-anchor of FOX 8 News in the Morning is this year's master of ceremonies. During the program, three Cleveland Municipal School District graduates will receive recognition and scholarships.
