| Jazz at Symphony Center series on Friday, January 20 The 2005-2006 Jazz at Symphony Center series continues on Friday, January 20 at 8 p.m. with a special double-bill performance featuring the Chicago Jazz Ensemble with Jon Faddis and Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts. The evening also includes a Jazz Connection performance before and after the show by trumpeter Maurice Brown and his quintet. The appearance of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble with Jon Faddis marks the beginning of Symphony Center’s two-concert focus on the big band tradition. Founded by the late composer and conductor William Russo as the professional jazz ensemble at Columbia College, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble gives more than 40 concerts per year at local, national and international venues. The ensemble, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is led by Artistic Director Jon Faddis and made up of musicians from the city’s jazz elite, including established stars, acclaimed Columbia College faculty and Chicago’s brightest young talents. The band’s large ensemble repertoire moves easily from the classic tunes of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington, to the works of contemporary jazz composers. The Chicago Jazz Ensemble’s Symphony Center program will include the world premiere of a work written in honor of William Russo by 2005 Grammy Award nominee Bill Holman. This concert marks CJE’s third performance on the Jazz at Symphony Center series. Symphony Center’s big band celebration continues on Friday, January 27 with a performance from the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Opening the program is Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts, the latest venture from drummer, composer and bandleader Matt Wilson. An Illinois native, Mr. Wilson moved to Boston after college and quickly made a name for himself on the jazz scene with his subtle, flexible style. Gigs with musicians like Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and Buster Williams soon followed, as did prestigious grants and commissions for his compositions from the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America’s New Works program. Arts & Crafts features this charismatic leader with accomplished jazz instrumentalists Terell Stafford on trumpet, Larry Goldings on piano and Dennis Irwin on bass. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Jazz News :: home page |
