Bill Frisell Returns To Zankel Hall

On Sunday, January 29 in Zankel Hall, Grammy Award-winning guitarist and composer Bill Frisell performs new works with his string ensemble Bill Frisell's 858 Quartet (violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, and cellist Hank Roberts) and special guest artists Ron Miles on trumpet and Greg Tardy on tenor sax and clarinet.

The program includes the world premiere of a multimedia piece by Mr. Frisell, created in collaboration with visual artist Jim Woodring, and co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the New York Guitar Festival. Mr. Frisell is featured in a pre-concert talk with John Schaefer, host of WNYC's Soundcheck and New Sounds in Zankel Hall. This concert is presented by Carnegie Hall in partnership with the New York Guitar Festival.

The world premiere of this multimedia composition features Bill Frisell's 858 Quartet providing the improvisational soundtrack to projected cartoon illustrations by Jim Woodring. Mr. Frisell--who was featured in the Opening Festival of Zankel Hall in 2003--first partnered with Mr. Woodring on the book Trosper, which included cartoon illustrations and a companion CD of original compositions by Mr. Frisell. This partnership subsequently led to their first joint performance piece, Mysterio Sympatico; this new work will mark their second performance collaboration.

With a career spanning more than 25 years with over 150 recordings, guitarist, composer, and bandleader Bill Frisell is one of the most sought after guitar voices in contemporary music. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, filmmakers, and legendary musicians, including Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithful, Caetano Veloso, Paul Simon, T-Bone Burnett; film directors Wim Wenders and Gus Van Sant; and cartoonist Gary Larson, among many others. Mr. Frisell's extensive discography includes original Buster Keaton film scores as well as the Grammy Award-winning Unspeakable (Nonesuch 2004) and the Grammy nominated The Intercontinentals (Nonesuch 2003). His latest album, released on the Nonesuch label in 2005, is a two-CD set titled East/West and features his two working trios recorded live in concert.
