A Night of Revolutionary New World Music

On Friday, December 30th, Room 710 in Austin, TX will host “Noche de Resistencia, ” a night of revolutionary new world music, performed by four up and coming Texas bands. These artists share a common goal of raising social awareness through their music, while still being able to have a good time. Room 710, in an attempt to open their doors wider to the entire music community, has invited these four bands from across the state to unite under one roof in order to kick off the New Year’s Weekend.

Friday’s performance consists of local favorites, as well as acts from San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The line up begins with Echo Squad, featuring the Macias brothers, originally from San Antonio, now based in Austin. Their blend of ska, punk, and reggae got them the 2003 vote for best San Antonio reggae/ska band in The Edge Magazine Readers poll.

Hailing from Corpus Christi, is Monkies Doin’ It, the second act in the line up. MDI is a high energy, funky ska/ reggae band that lays down infectious horn driven grooves and is capable of switching styles at the drop of a hat. They posses a laid back beach attitude, mixed with a high energy that makes them a perfect addition to this event.

Based in Austin, Five Ton Chicken has been setting their sights on the world stage. Their latest release, “Everything Turns Grey, ” has been enjoying regular airplay in such places as Ghana, England and Portugal, as well as the western United States. This nine-piece band blends together heavy reggae rhythms with powerful vocals, brass-filled melodies, and some of the finest turntablism around, all in the spirit of early punk rock.

Headlining Friday’s event is Bombasta, a seven-piece collective based out of San Antonio. This highly innovative band fuses musica Latina, reggae, hip hop, and funk into a fresh mix of Spanglish rhymes and tight horn lines. Bombasta has been playing throughout the state and is currently finishing their first independent CD release, entitled III Movimiento, to be released in early 2006.

“Noche de Resistencia, ” at Room 710, is an event that will bring together four up and coming Texas bands that posses great soul and a great sound. A strong turnout is anticipated for this dynamic mix of resistance-minded original music that speaks to the soul, while moving the body.
