Northern Lights Festival In Tromsų, Norway

The Northern Lights Festival offers you music of high artistic quality at the time when the sun reappears for the first time since November. The history of festival's artists includes outstanding musicians of various genres such as contemporary, symphonic, sacred, choral, chamber orchestra, song recitals, musical theatre, ethnic folk, experimental jazz and multimedia.

The Northern Lights Festival 2005 theme - was "Rhythms". The theme was covered by the use of internationally acknowledged artists as well as musicians from the region. This year, the festival had chosen a specific festival artist, the English percussionist Evelyn Glennie OBE. She participated in a variety of activities during the festival and among other thing performed the World Premiere of the Scottish composer Sally Beamish's new concert written for Evelyn Glennie called "Trance o Nicht". The composer was also present on this occasion.

For 2006, was chosen the theme "Refraction". It is interesting to have a look into the future in the light of our historical experiences, we would like to challenge contrasting musical expressions and we will bring artists together that represents different perspectives on both music and values in a broader sense.

Refraction is a phenomena observed in nature, for instance the refraction of light when it passes through materials as glass or ice or water. Thus, you can see that the single coloured beam turns into the whole spectre of colours. In the same way we think that music can be filtered through human medias and become a new and possibly even more colourful variety.

The festival will take place between the 25th and the 30th of January 2006.
