| Stefano Battaglia’s first album for ECM „Raccolto“ (Harvest) is the title of Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia’s first album for ECM. The release of the album was celebrated with a special event in Siena, promoted by La Fondazione Siena Jazz, together with ECM’s Italian distributor Ducale. A press conference was held at the Biblioteca dell Centro nazionale studi sul Jazz, situated in the old Fortress Medicea, where Francesco Martinelli interviewed Battaglia about his work, and where the pianist fielded questions from the media. This was followed by a concert at the Teatro dei Rozzi where Battaglia’s group Triosonic with Giovanni Maier (bass), and Michele Rabbia (drums, percussion) played to a packed house, the audience intently following the unfolding of the music. The group’s seamless sequencing of compositions and improvisations, simultaneously lyrical, spacious and freely expressive, communicated powerfully. Triosonic is one of two trios heard on „Raccolto“, the other is the group Atem with Rabbia and French violinist Dominique Pifarély; its collective improvisations are closer in spirit to modern composition. „We attempt to improvise structure“, says Battaglia.
