Jazz concert, workshop at Firehouse

The Firehouse Center for the Arts continues its commitment to bring unique, high-quality jazz to the Newburyport area by presenting the Makanda Project in a 7:30 p.m. concert Saturday, Nov. 12. A workshop for student musicians and other interested parties will be held at 4 p.m.

The Makanda Project is a nine-piece ensemble whose repertoire consists of unrecorded compositions by the late multi-instrumentalist Makanda Ken McIntyre. McIntyre, a Massachusetts native, achieved international renown first through seminal early-1960s recordings with Eric Dolphy and Cecil Taylor, and then through his own achievements as a bandleader, as well as his pioneering work as a jazz educator.

When he died in 2001, he left 400 compositions that had not been recorded. He had special gifts and original conceptions as a composer; hence, the discovery of this body of work, and the Makanda Project’s efforts in bringing it to the public are significant developments in the jazz world at large. The Makanda Project features several of Boston’s most renowned jazz musicians.

The workshop will revolve around McIntyre’s approach to teaching jazz, which emphasized the central role of rhythm and the development of each improvisor’s personal voice.
