| Galt MacDermot and His New Pulse Jazz Band at Carnegie Hall Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Galt MacDermot will be performing with his New Pulse Jazz Band and Broadway singers at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall on Friday evening, November 18th at 8:00 PM. MacDermot will premiere The City Suite, to be released on Kilmarnock Records in the spring, and excerpts from a new composition, The Tinderbox, an adaptation of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale with book and lyrics by Matty Selman. To the delight of both jazz and funk aficionados, Galt MacDermot will be accompanied by drummer Bernard Purdie (Aretha Franklin, Sam and Dave, Steely Dan), bassist Wilbur Bascomb (Jeff Beck), saxophonists Allen Won and Patience Higgins, trumpeter John Frosk, and trombonist Vince MacDermot, who make up the New Pulse Jazz Band. Galt MacDermot has been playing with the New Pulse band for 26 years and there is an unmistakable comfort level between the musicians as they explore rhythmic and melodic subtleties. The Galt MacDermot concert at Weill Hall, at which he premieres new music, has become a tradition with MacDermot fans. This is the ninth concert in which he will introduce new music and close the evening with a medley of songs from HAIR, proving that “peace, love, freedom and happiness” never go out of style. Catrice Joseph, Suzanne Griffin, Melanie Po and Luther Creek, accompanied by Galt MacDermot and the Band, will reprise tunes from HAIR. Galt MacDermot’s compositions span the gamut of the American music scene. His most recent projects include the very successful production this past summer of Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Delacorte Theatre in New York’s Central Park, produced by Oskar Eustis and The Public Theatre, and a new production of The Goddess Wheel, written with playwright Matty Selman, which will premier at the Cap 21 theater in Manhattan on November 30. In London, a production of HAIR is receiving rave reviews and a production of The Human Comedy, the musical opera written by MacDermot and Bill Dumaresq, and originally produced by Joseph Papp at The Public Theater, will go into production next year at The New Vic in London. Asian Suite, MacDermot’s 51st release on Kilmarnock Records, his family-owned label, will ship this winter. In addition, Galt MacDermot's music has found a new venue with young rap artists who find his rhythms perfect for setting their lyrics. MacDermot is currently collaborating with Los Angeles rapper Oh No on a new CD on the Stones Throw Records label. Climbing the hip-hop charts is “Come Fly With Me” by Foxy Brown and Sizzla, on RockAFella Records, sampled from “Cathedral” off of MacDermot's 1972 soundtrack, Woman is Sweeter; Run-DMC won a Grammy Award with “Down With The King” from HAIR’s “Where Do I Go?”; and “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check” by Busta Rhymes, derived from MacDermot's Martine's Movie / Woman is Sweeter, which was a Billboard top chart-buster. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Jazz News :: home page |
