| The CJE Present an Evening with Cedar and Corky by Ronaldo Oregano ,Jazz Police On Saturday, October 8th the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Jon Faddis, features two special guests - Corky Siegel, a Chicago favorite renowned for his great mouth-harp work, and Cedar Walton, a soulful pianist and dynamic composer. With Corky, the CJE will draw upon its classics; with Cedar, the CJE will develop different dimensions, with new commissions of Cedar's orchestrated for big band. This intimate evening is presented in part to honor Bill Russo (1925 - 2003), the founding conductor of the CJE. The concert will take place at the Getz Theatre at 64 East 11th Street in Chicago at 8:00 PM. Corky Siegel has earned an international reputation as one of the world's great blues harmonica masters. He is a composer, blues pianist, singer / songwriter, and recent winner of the Lila Wallace/Reader's Digest/Meet the Composer's national award for chamber music composition and the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award for Music Composition. Cedar Walton (born in 1934) is a hard bop pianist who has had an active role in the evolution of jazz in the second half of the 20th century. After leaving the army, in which he had performed in a jazz ensemble, he joined Kenny Dorham's band. After playing with J. J. Johnson and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he played with Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. In 1959 he recorded on John Coltrane's seminal album Giant Steps. He left the Messengers in 1964, and recorded with Abbey Lincoln and Lee Morgan, among others, and led the band Eastern Rebellion.
