What Is Jazz? @ World Café Live Philadelphia

A monthly concert series that mixes and matches styles, sounds and players while begging the question...What is Jazz?

The series will include film such as Electric Miles, Monk in Oslo and Mingus Triumph of the Underdog; an educational component with the graduate students from University of Pennsylvania's music studies division, and of course great music. The first of the series begins on September 21st and features:
DJ Logic Trio with Calvin Weston & Jamaladeen Tacuma
The John Ellis Quartet
Uri Caine vs. Jason Moran in a keyboard duel to the death (sort of).

An alumnus of the Black Rock Coalition and a product of the Bronx, DJ Logic has always built on a diverse foundation of sounds and has a keen admiration for the collaborative and improvisational arts. Logic’s first gig as a bandleader was in 1999, implementing his own version of live band with turntablist concept as Project Logic. In 2001, Logic recorded his Ropeadope debut album entitled DJ Logic Presents Project Logic following up in 2002 with the critically acclaimed solo record, The Anomaly. In addition, Logic is the co-leader of The Yohimbe Brothers with Vernon Reid. The duo have recorded Front End Lifter for Ropeadope (2002) and The Tao of Yo for Thirsty Ear in (2004). DJ Logic has gone on to perform all over the world, circling states, countries and venues everywhere from France and the UK to Brazil and Japan and with everyone from Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and John Mayer to MMW, Graham Haynes, Don Byron, John Scofield, Joshua Redman and Christian McBride. His role as a producer keeps him at the top of his game, fulfilling countless requests for remixes for groups such as Soulive, Weather Report, Olu Dara, Freddie Hubbard and Phish. In 2005, Logic can be heard on the Charlie Hunter + Bobby Previte = Groundtruther Thirsty Ear release and is currently busy laying down tracks for his long awaited third album to be released on Ropeadope, Winter 2005.

Uri Caine was born in Philadelphia and began studying piano there with Bernard Peiffer. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and studied music composition. While in school, he played with many visiting musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Benny Golson, Phil Woods, Donald Byrd, J.J. Johnson, Stanley Turrentine, and Lester Bowie. Caine has recorded fifteen albums as a leader, most found on Winter and Winter records. His first two CD's Sphere Music and Toys paid homage to the great jazz pianists Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock. His third CD, Urlict/ Primal Light featured arrangements of the music of Gustav Mahler and won the international ‘‘Composer's Hut” award for Best Mahler CD of 1997. In Wagner In Venezia, Caine arranged the music of Richard Wagner for a small ensemble playing live at the Café Quadri in St. Mark's Square, Venice. His next CD, Blue Wail, included original compositions for a piano trio and featured Ralph Peterson and James Genus. That same year while touring Uri recorded Gustav Mahler in Toblach live at the Gustav Mahler Festival in Toblach/Dobbacio, Italy. In 1999 he released The Sidewalks of New York a tribute to early Tin Pan Alley. In 2000 Caine released a version of Schumann's ‘‘Dichterliebe” song cycle, Love Fugue and a new version of The Goldberg Variations. In 2001, three new CD's were released-Solitaire for solo piano, Rio, recorded live in Rio de Janiero with several groups, and Bedrock3, a trio featuring electric piano with Zach Danziger, Tim Lefebvre and DJ Logic on turntables. In 2002 he recorded The Diabelli Variations an arrangement of Beethoven's Opus 120 for piano and orchestra with Concerto Koln. A new CD of Mahler songs, Dark Flame was released in 2003. In 2004, Caine released Live at Village Vanguard, a trio featuring Drew Gress and Ben Perowsky and in September 2005 loyal fans anticipate a new release by Uri and his electronic trio, Bedrock, entitled Shelf-life, on the Winter and Winter label.
